Hey everyone. I'm not a parent, and don't have plans on being one anytime soon. I was just curious about something. How is a blind person supposed to push a stroller, while using a cane? I mean, it doesn't make sense. You can't use the stroller to see what's in front of you. Do they make special strollers?? Thanks!!

i've seen a number of posts on this subject. If my memory hasn't completely failed me yet, IT is possible to pull the stroller behind you while using the cane. Um ... someone help me out here. am I correct about this?

I am not a parent either

That is how a friend of mine did it. It worked out very well for her.

Slings and pouches are great. If you want a pushchair though, try and get one with a single handle rather than those with a separate one on each side. Then hold the handle in the middle with the non-cane hand and pull it behind you as you walk.

I'm told the umbrella strolars are best for polling behind you, but are for older children. I wil be getting one but I think when the babys really little it will either be carried in the new born car seat or prefurrably in a front carrior. In that case the baby is already connected to you with all the straps so you would just use the cane with a straight arm rather than with the cane against the tummy for more response time. Best to swich to the back when baby is ready though because it will be easier to use the cane and you would come in to contact with things before baby, but for baby's safety front carriors are better at first, and also easier especially if nursing. Mind you I'm pregnant now, but have watched other friends who used carriors etc.

I used to pull ours, even the big one. Just tip it on its back wheels and ... go.
Also when they get old enough, teach them to ride on your shoulders and to lean forward especially when you are going under a tree and what not. All this stuff is doable: I've even heard of people who can see using a wagon. It all works out.

i have always been a fan of using the slings and frunt and back carriers, but now that my little man is the size of a large 3 year old, I can't do that with eze any more, so i do push the stroler and use the cain, umbrella strolers are best for this, i was lucky enough to find one with the bar handle that goes across rather then the ones with the sepperat handles, works like a charm. i'm lucky enough to be tall enough to have a long cain, so I just wip it out their.

I have a huge stroller for my daughter because she became to where she didn't seem to like the umbrella strollers. She was too cramped. So, I am going to get her a wagon. I think that would work best, especially when they start getting heavy. Chloe is at that curious age, so I think rides in a wagon would be fun for her.

I realize this is a bit off topic
and yet with baby slings being mentioned
thot I would add this comment.

There was a recent news report on baby slings,
regarding a need to practice some extra safety measures.
To make sure as baby rests that their head doesn't like
loop over the sling portion and thusly suffocates them.

Thot I would pass this info on in hopes of being of help.
"Baby slings to get warning after deaths
Safety advocates say product can cause infant suffocating"

that depends on the type of sling you get and how it fits around them. You make sure to get a sling that will not have this issue and the right sized sling for your little one. the same one that works for them at 2 months won't maybe work at 18 months.

Yes, this is important what you are saying.
This news report was more so in the case of
newborns, before they had the strength
with their necks to hold their heads up for the main.
That as they would snooze and their heads like lean over
the material of the sling holding them
to make doubly sure that this material is not
cutting off their air supply by their necks

I have a two-year-old daughter, and when she was a newborn I had a travel system with the carrier and stroller from Grecco. The handle of the carrier was made to where you could pull it all the way back, and I used that to pull the stroller behind me and use the cane in front. As she got older, though, she grew out of the carrier, and the actual handle of the stroller itself was kind of tall and awkward to pull because I am short and it was hard on my arm. I finally got an umbrella stroller. The one I have has the two separate handles, but I find that easier, because I pull the stroller with my left hand on the left handle and align my back so that it is between and a little in front of the handles, and it stays behind me without too much trouble. I like it because the handles are a lot shorter than the one on the travel system so it fits my size better. Now I only take the umbrella stroller when I take the bus because there is a lot of walking involved, but if I am taking paratransit or just going on a short bus trip, I just let her walk with me or put her horse tether on. It is for toddlers, and it is like a backpack in the shape of a horse made from stuffed animal material, and it has a strap that is attached to it so the parent can hold the strap to make sure the child doesn't run away from them. It gives them a few feet to move around, and the little backpack has a little room for a toy or whatever you want to put in it. I have found it to be very useful in many situations.

This question is actually on the list I've started in preparation to have my first child in a couple years. I think I'd have to use front carriers all the time if possible. I'd be scared as hell to carry/pull my kiddo behind me because it seems that she could be snatched very easily that way.

there are a couple of strollers that have reversable handles so that when you pull them behind you, your baby is facing you. greccpo makes one and venesia made one but it's been discontinued. think you can still find on ebay and the likes. i'd honestly be leary of pulling my daughter behind me unless she was turned around facing me. baby wearing is the greatest thing and there are so many different slings, `wraps, and carriiers

I used a front carrior and backpack until Ryan was about 2. Another awesome device is the Sit & Stroll. It's a carseat that converts into a stroller with the pull of a lever. It didn't roll backwards very well but it was good enough. Shweew, I sure don't miss those days. lol
